Slack is the preferred instant messaging software for Via. The Tech team will set up an account that is linked to our corporate Via account.

When to use Slack vs Wrike?

Slack is for discussions, ideation and chit-chat that occurs before a task is started or does not relate to a particular task. The goal is to have a record of all work done on tasks to be recorded in Wrike. Ask yourself, “Am I asking for someone to perform some type of work that I want to ensure gets done?” If yes, then create a Wrike ticket.

Where should I post a message (Public Channel, Private Channel, Direct Message)?

When you start a conversation keep in mind who you may potentially pull into a conversation later. Keeping messages as public as possible unleashes the power of collaboration in Slack. The flowchart describes questions you should ask when determining where to post a message (using SRS as an example).

Should I use Threads?

YES! When you post a message to a channel enter a simple subject for the conversation (similar to the subject in an email). Then click the bubble icon on the message to create a Thread. All of the messages should be entered in the Thread. By keeping the conversations in Thread the Channels will be easy to navigate. You can see in the examples below that it makes a big difference when you are trying to scan through Threads what the topic is. All of these examples are in the #general channel

In the first example, we see that someone started a thread called Oorah! This doesn’t really tell us much of what the thread topic is.

In the second example, we see that someone posted a question. We can tell what the question is, but this prevents the thread from being used for broader conversations in the future.

The last example is what our goal is. It is a short message that helps us to see what the topic is and is broad enough to be used in future discussions
